SunLife recent report, the 2025 Cost of Dying report, shows that the general “cost of dying” has increased.
The report shows that the “cost of dying” now costs an average of £9,797, which is a 1.4% increase from the year prior.
For example, the cost of a basic funeral is £4,285 (a rise of 3.5%).
The report shows that families are suffering from financial pressures when trying to find the funds to pay for funerals, with many resorting to using savings and loans. Whilst some may wish to have extravagant funerals, and that a funeral will inevitably be paid from estate monies, it is important to bear in mind that many families do have to front up the cost of the funeral in the first instance. It can be some time until they are reimbursed from the estate, especially considering the ongoing delays with the probate registry.
