I recently read an article about an inheritance dispute whereby two siblings' inheritance dispute with their uncle, the Executor of the estate of their grandmother, has resulted in the uncle receiving a prison sentence.
The siblings’ grandmother passed away in 2019 and left a quarter of her estate to both her granddaughter and grandson. Sadly, despite this being stated within her Will, her son (the siblings’ uncle) refused to give the money that the siblings were entitled to under the Will.
The siblings took their uncle to Court and this resulted in the uncle receiving a six-week prison sentence.
It is important to understand the duties of an Executor and failure to act correctly can lead to legal action.
If you are an Executor of an estate, make sure you understand your duties and undertake those duties properly.
